ORIGIN There are two stories about the origin of New Year:-   1st story - New Year wasn’t always celebrated on 1st Jan. The earliest New Year celebrations date back to about 4,000 years ago. At that time, the people of ancient Babylon began their New Year in March. They had an 11-day celebration at the beginning of Spring as the crops were being planted for the upcoming year. 2nd story - New Year on 1st January was declared by Julius Caesar, the Roman emperor. He declared 1st Jan as a national holiday after the name of the god Janus, the Roman God of doors and gates. Janus had two faces one looking forward and the other looking back. FACTS 1.) North America - People celebrate New Year by gathering family and friends for parties. Sometimes, meals and spectacular firework displays are also on. 2.) Greece - a gold or silver coin is mixed in the cake called a Vasilopita. The person receiving the piece of cake with the coin is said to be lucky for the rest of the year. 3.) Spain ...

What is soundproofing and carbon dating?

1.) how a room is made Soundproof?

Ans- You must have heard of soundproof rooms. Sound travels in the form of waves. Sound waves can travel through air, water and even solid materials like glass. Sound waves get weaker as they move away from the source. Glass windowpane is too thin to resist sound but two panes put 20 centimeters apart weaken the sound greatly. Soft materials like heavy curtains absorb sound and make the room soundproof. To make the recording rooms of studios soundproof, the walls are constructed without windows but with holes. The walls and ceiling are also lined with sound absorbing panels made of cork, foam etc.

2.) what is carbon dating?

Human’s natural curiosity about knowing the age of different organisms that once lived on Earth resulted in the technique of Carbon Dating. The ages of different age-old plants and animals can be determined through the Carbon Dating process. Some other names of this technique are Radiocarbon and Carbon-14 Dating. Like all materials, Carbon is made up of atoms.

A small fraction of all carbon atoms are distinct from the fact that they are radioactive and hence unstable. These atoms have 13-14 Nucleons whereas the majority have 12. Carbon-14 is Radioactive because it is Unstable and breaks down (decays) slowly into other elements. After the break-up, they emit a burst of nuclear radiation. Radioactive things decay very slowly but are continuously renewed in living organisms. The decay is at a uniform rate. The radiocarbon becomes half in about 5,700 years which is also known as half-life. Using this as the basis, the life of any fossil can be determined. Whether it is dating Egyptian Mummies or Pre-historic fossils, Carbon-Dating is extensively used by scientists.
