 ORIGIN There are two stories about the origin of New Year:-   1st story - New Year wasn’t always celebrated on 1st Jan. The earliest New Year celebrations date back to about 4,000 years ago. At that time, the people of ancient Babylon began their New Year in March. They had an 11-day celebration at the beginning of Spring as the crops were being planted for the upcoming year. 2nd story - New Year on 1st January was declared by Julius Caesar, the Roman emperor. He declared 1st Jan as a national holiday after the name of the god Janus, the Roman God of doors and gates. Janus had two faces one looking forward and the other looking back. FACTS 1.) DUSSEHRA-THE VICTORY OF GOOD OVER EVIL

 Dussehra also known as Vijayadashami, Dasara or Dashain. The festival is celebrated at the end of Navratri every year. The festival is celebrated differently in various parts of the Indian subcontinent.  In southern, eastern,  northestern part it is believed that Vijayadashami is the end of Durga puja  remembering Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura to restore dharma.  In the northern, central and western states, the festival is called Dussehra. In these regions, it marks the end of Ramlila and remembers Lord Rama's victory over Ravana.  सिद्धगन्धर्वयक्षाघैरसुरैरमरैरपि। सेव्यमाना सदा भूयात् सिद्धिदा सिद्धिदायिनी॥ वन्दे वांछित मनोरथार्थ चन्द्रार्घकृत शेखराम्। कमलस्थितां चतुर्भुजा सिद्धीदात्री यशस्वनीम्॥ स्वर्णावर्णा निर्वाणचक्रस्थितां नवम् दुर्गा त्रिनेत्राम्। शख, चक्र, गदा, पदम, धरां सिद्धीदात्री भजेम्॥ Siddhidatri is the ninth form of the Goddess Durga. NAVRATRI SERIES: DAY 8-> MATA MAHAGAURI

Mata Mahagauri represents Mata Parvati in her phase of recovery. She is the Goddess of Beauty and women. She has the powers to fulfill all the desires of her devotees. Her devotees get relief from all their sufferings in life. Mantra:-  श्वेते वृषे समारुढा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः। महागौरी शुभं दघान्महादेवप्रमोददा॥ Her weapons are-Trident (Trishul), Tambourine (Damaru), Abhayamudra and Varada mudra. Her name means exceptionally bright with a shine like the Moon. She is worshipped on the eighth day of Navratri. After she took the form of Mata Kali, she returned to her normal form but with her skin black. On Lord Brahma’s advice, she submerged herself in the Manasarovara River and came back with her skin shining like the Moon and her white clothes and ornaments.   She is the seventh form of goddess Durga. She is widely known as one of the most destructive forms of the mother goddess, which include Kali, Mahakali, Bhadrakali, Bhairavi, Mrityu, Rudrani, Chamunda, Chandi and Durga. She is worshipped during the ninie nights of Navratri celebrations. The seventh day is devoted to her and her appearance itself invokes fear. She is believed to be the destroyer of all demons, ghosts, evil spirits and negative energies, who flee upon knowing of her arrival. She is also known as Shubhankari- meaning auspicious/doing good. It is believed that she makes her devotees fearless. Her planet is Saturn. She mounts on a donkey, lion or tiger. NAVRATRI SERIES: DAY 6-> MATA KATYAYANI

 She is the sixth form of Navratri. She is known as a  slayer of the horrible demon Mahishasura. She is an avatar of mata Durga. She mounts on a lion. Her weapons are: Khadaga (longsword), Padma or Lotus. Her planet is Jupiter. She is first mentioned in the Taittiriya Aranyaka part of the Yajurveda. Skanda Purana mentions her being created out of the spontaneous anger of Gods, which eventually led to slaying the demon, Mahishasura, mounted on the lion. This occasion is celebrated during the annual Durga Puja festival in most parts of India. She is the daughter of sage Katyayana, hence known as Katayayani. She is the fifth form of mata durga. Her name is derived from skanda, which is an alternate name for Kartikeya, and mata meaning mother. She is four-armed,three eyed , and rides on a lion. Her one hand is fear dispelling while the other is used to hold the infant form of her son Skanda on her lap. Her remaining two hands are typically shown holding lotus flowers.  MATA CHANDRAGHANTA Chandraghanta means “one who has a half-moon shaped like a bell. Her third eye is always opened and she is always ready for war against demons.” She is the third form of Mata Durga, worshipped on the third day of Navratri. She is also known as Chandika, Rannchandi and Chandrakhanda. She is known for rewarding people with her grace, courage and bravery. All the sins-distresses, physical sufferings, mental problems and ghostly hurdles of her followers are discarded by her grace.  Mantra:- पिण्डजप्रवरारुढा चण्डकोपास्त्रकैर्युता। प्रसादं तनुते मह्यं चन्द्रघण्टेति विश्रुता॥  Meaning:- This form of mata is supremely peaceful and benevolent.
