Celebrating New Year? This can make it more Amazing!

 ORIGIN There are two stories about the origin of New Year:-   1st story - New Year wasn’t always celebrated on 1st Jan. The earliest New Year celebrations date back to about 4,000 years ago. At that time, the people of ancient Babylon began their New Year in March. They had an 11-day celebration at the beginning of Spring as the crops were being planted for the upcoming year. 2nd story - New Year on 1st January was declared by Julius Caesar, the Roman emperor. He declared 1st Jan as a national holiday after the name of the god Janus, the Roman God of doors and gates. Janus had two faces one looking forward and the other looking back. FACTS 1.) North America - People celebrate New Year by gathering family and friends for parties. Sometimes, meals and spectacular firework displays are also on. 2.) Greece - a gold or silver coin is mixed in the cake called a Vasilopita. The person receiving the piece of cake with the coin is said to be lucky for the rest of the year. 3.) Spain ...

Egyptian Gods and Goddesses

The Gods held great leverage over the daily lives of the ancient Egyptian society. According to them the Gods were the creators of the cosmos and the people that set order. The rituals and sacrifices were held for them. In this post we will tell you about some of the Gods like Isis, Osiris, Horus, Ra,  Nut, Anubis.

Isis


Isis (Egyptian Aset or Eset) was the eldest daughter of Geb and Nut . She had for siblings, Osiris, Seth, Nephthys and Haroeris . She was both a sibling and wife of Osiris. There children were Horus, Bastet and Ammit. Isis was the goddess of protection, patron of nature, the dead children, the noble and the commoners. Her magical powers were unmatchable with any other God. Even Ra or Osiris could not match her skills. She became one of the chief dieties of ancient Egypt. She cured the ill and brought the dead back to life. The cult of Isis was distant as far as the Greco-Roman world , the Roman empire and Afghanistan .

Osiris


Osiris (also known as Usir, Asiri, Ausir or Ausar) was the child of Geb and Nut. He was initially the God of Earth. He was the God of afterlife , the dead and the underworld. Osiris is depicted as a Mummy with his hands crossed over his chest . In one hand he had a Flail while in the other, he had a crook. 

Ra 


Ra (other names- Re or Pra) the God of sun and radiance , was a solar diety whose territory was far and wide. Ra’s symbols consist of sun disc, the hawk and falcon. He was the second most mighty god. His rival was Apep (Apophis) the God of chaos . He was Ra’s arch enemy .He dwelled just below the horizon line and would swallow Ra every time he went to the Underworld. 

Anubis


Anubis or Anpu was the ruler of death , the underworld and funerals . He mummified the corpse of the dead and protected the tombs . Anubis was the child of Seth and Nephthys . Anubis was also the adopted child of Isis and Osiris. The illustrations of Anubis are a jackal or a man with a head of a Jackal. His art of embalming was first practiced on the body of Osiris . He is credited with the creation of this craft. 

Horus


Horus (Hor, Har, Her or Heru) was the Egyptian diety of kingship and sun. He was also depicted as the God of war, hunting ,  upper Egypt ,light and protection . Serket (Haroeris) and Hathor were believed to be his consorts .  

Nut

The sister and consort of Geb, Nut was the mother of Nephthys, Isis ,Osiris and Seth . Her power spread across many realms ; Nut was the goddess of the sky, stars, the sun, light, the moon, Astronomy, heaven, the universe, winds and the air. Nut participated in saving Osiris and was thus seen as a friend of the dead.
